Edmonton Yoga Classes
Whole Family Health offers a range of yoga classes that specialize in the areas of fertility, prenatal, and postnatal health. Yoga is known for its ability to alleviate stress, but it also aids in the healing of the body.
The clinic offers small group classes that allow for plenty of one-on-one attention and individual private sessions. Our yoga programs combine the traditions of yin and yang yoga - yin to release tension, restore the body, and still the mind, and yang to lengthen, strengthen, and create flexibility in the muscles.
Our goal is to create unique yoga classes designed to complement the work that is being done with your acupuncturist and massage therapist to give you a well-rounded, holistic approach to healing and transitioning into motherhood.
To register for any of our yoga classes, please contact us at (780) 756-7736. You can also register in person at the clinic.
Yoga can aid in conception by helping to reduce stress through breathing techniques, meditation, and conscious movement. It also helps increase blood flow and circulation to the reproductive organs, relieves nerve compression, and detoxifies the organs for optimal performance and hormone balance.
Prenatal yoga is recommended throughout the duration of your pregnancy. Yoga helps open and stretch the physical body and the internal organs as the body begins to change to make room for your baby. Prenatal yoga is a safe way to relieve compression and tension in the shoulders, the lower back, and hips as well as aid in the circulation of bodily fluids that increase during pregnancy.
This class is designed to go deeper into the healing and recovery process for women after delivery. The class focuses on strengthening the pelvic floor, the transverse abdominals, and the lower back as well as providing release to the shoulders, neck and chest. This class is intended for moms to come alone without their baby. It is recommended that women begin postnatal yoga 6-8 weeks after delivery. It is important for the body to rest for the first six weeks after delivery to begin the initial healing process and to adjust to the new lifestyle of being a mom.
Mom & Baby Yoga
This class is a combination of gentle yoga postures as well as poses to incorporate movement with the baby. Babies will also receive a little yoga practice to create a bit of mobility and interact with mom. This class is a nice way to meet with other moms and babies.
Hatha Yoga is a combination of traditional yoga postures that are sequenced together to provide openness and flexibility within the physical body. We focus on the breath, the alignment of the body and maintaining the mind in a state of awareness. We begin to create space within our bodies so that we are able to breath deeper, to move prana (energy), and dissolve physically tension.
In the practice of Yin Yoga our focus is on softening our muscles so that we can begin to stretch and open our connective tissues. Yin teaches us to find comfort in the stillness as we hold these seated postures for a long duration of time than we would in a hatha practice. Yin's focus is on the joints and the tissues that support those joints, so the yin practice is a great for those recovering from injuries or for those who have lost the full mobility in parts of their body (particularly shoulders, low back, hips, and knees). This practice is safe and gentle as it restores the body by slowly opening and stretching those areas of resistance, removing blockages and stagnate energy.
In addition to our scheduled classes, we will be offering individual private sessions that will focus on the specific goals that you are trying to achieve.
These sessions will be unique and unlike anywhere else as the yoga instructor will be able to focus directly on the issues you are facing and help aid in the healing work you are doing at Whole Family Health. Please contact us for more information on our Private Yoga Sessions.
